Before Clash at the Dragon's Rest

Lei Shan, Wei Lan’s storm lion, was restless. ”Patience, my love”, she whispered to it, ”haste is the steed of dead men”. Lei Shan made a grunt in response. It could sense the approach of battle.

Wei focused on the steady pulse of Lei Shan’s systems. These machines where part sentient, she was sure. Well, they were made from the salvaged Autonikos in the first place. Machines like the once they had come to annihilate today.

In the distance, the Autonikos drew ever closer. A roiling black mass of arakomachine creeped and crawled underneath the three great giganthropoi as they trudged onwards, the lights of their enormous rail gun arms flickering. A little ways behind everything else, a thanoura ambled on its six legs, its tail in resting position on top of it but the tip glowing a hot orange, indicating that it was ready to raise it at any time.

This was an army of immense destructive power. The thanoura alone would spell doom to any city it reached. Yet, in a way, Wei thought, these machines were things of beauty. It was almost a shame she would have to destroy them. With some luck they might be able to salve some of them later.

Night Lions, hold your ground!”, she commanded. ”Do not engage until the commander’s word”, Lin Edu, her second in command, added. There were murmurs of acknowleadgement among the riders. These were veterans of many a battle. They knew the drill.

It was almost time now. Wei inspected her firepoint once more. She didn’t really need to do it, she already knew her weapon was in order. Wei just wanted to make sure her idol was still hanging from it. The tattered and ash stained doll still securely dangling from the barrel of the lions roar arc cannon. It danced in irregular little circles, excited by the motion of the raised weapon.

She smiled. The spirit of the nameless little girl would get her vengeance today.
